New Diesel Cars Seen by the Customers
La DB Regionalbahn Rheinland GmbH, an enterprise of the Deutsche Bahn AG Gruppe (DB AG), has been using for a good year new Diesel motor cars of the type Talent VT 644 around Cologne. Its use is based on a transport contract of 15 years with the transport association Rhein-Sieg (VRS). Within the framework of a market inquiry, the DB AG has examined the acceptance of the new product by the customer. The results of this inquiry are positive for the enterprise and they confirm the strategy of the enterprise: The majority of the customers give very good and good marks for the new trains. Apparently, the DB AG has succeeded in fulfilling the customers´ wishes. In their opinion, there are only few points to be optimized. The DB AG examines at present the realisation of such improvements.

Consultation for Schools by the HVV
The promotion of a socially and environmentally acceptable behaviour of mobility of children and teenagers is the principal task of the consultation for schools by the transport association of Hamburg. The consultation is carried out on three levels according to the specific age groups: The bus school is conceived as a training of security for the classes 1 to 3, the independent use of bus and train is the centre of the offer for the classes 4 to 6 whereas subjects as mobility and ecology, city planning and transport policy are dealed with in the classes 7 to 10. The educational efforts made in the field of transport are also for the enterprises advantageous - which is shown as well in the area of prevention of vandalism.

The Bremer Straßenbahn AG (BSAG) has launched in July 1999 a special program for management trainees in order to enable them to pass all-around qualifications. Starting from the principle that the employees constitute the most important potential of modernisation, the idea has come up to invite tenders for a program of qualification for which each employee could have applied. La BASG wants to cover their medium-term need in managers and to train them in a way that they advance the important processes of the inner modernisation.Finally, an important aim is the abolition of the existing barriers between the different areas (e.g. administration, workshop and driving service).

Measures Taken to Improve the Employees´ Health of an Enterprise
The economic damage of a transport enterprise amounts to several millions caused by absenteeism owing to illness. The reasons for such a loss of working hours are complexe and exceed the possibilities of the enterprise in the fields of the causal research and therapeutical approach. Within the framework of the measures taken to improve the employees´ health, a model project is presented which is to help the enterprises and the employees to reduce the number of ill people. The starting point is the model of rehabilitation from the biological and psychosocial point of view. The aim is to redress an endangered efficiency and to avoid further risks.

Reliable Stations for Automatic Subways
In case of fully automatic and driverless undergrounds, the directives in force relative to the protection of persons on the platform make an adequate security of the danger zone necessary. It is often not sufficient to subsequently install a platform door for the existing undergrounds in order to fulfill the requirements of the directives. Therefore, the society DaimlerChrysler Rail Systems (Signal) Gmbh has conceaved, developed and realised within the framework of the research project on the Berlin underground and the transformation of the actual operation into an automatic one and on the basis of laser scanners and the video technique an installation which controls the platform in view of dangerous situations.

Tendencies Relative to the Development of Utility Vehicles
The different limits of emission worldwide on the one hand and the different categories of vehicles on the other hand demand technologies which are adapted to the legal and economic requirements. The author wants to show how these demands can be fulfilled with the best possible fuel consumption and acceptable costs of the system. Three strategies of development are discussed: exhaust gas recirculation of the inner motor, exhaust gas recirculation with particle filters as well as nitrogen exhaustion by Selective Catalytic Reduction. Finally, the technically possible strategies for the respective range of application are discussed from the economic point of view.

Automation of Subways under rolling wheels
The automation of conventional driven undergrounds to the operation mode Ñmanless train operation (MTO)ì gives the public transit authorities the opportunity to increase the quality of operation to a new level and increase also the ecconomic efficiency. Worldwide experiences with this operstion mode, the now given laws and decrees and the results of the Berlin research project STAR suggests to make use of this oppurtunity. Under the environment of passenger benefits, ecconomie efficiency and the realisation during running operation (under the rolling wheel) it was necessarry to come to specific introduction strategies as basis for a technical solution.

Rail Regional Passenger Transport ñ Target Network 2002 for Saxony
For the Free State of Saxony DB Regio AG, a subsidiary of German Rail, in co-operation with the bodies responsible for rail regional passenger transport (RRPT) in Saxony developed a target network for RRPT oriented towards the year 2002. The concept of this offer is based on the 'Integral Interval Timetable (IT)' principle. The authors describe the starting conditions under aspects of structure and regional planning, and perceivable trends of development in the Free State of Saxony; they explain the outline conditions in terms of traffic ruling the development of RRPT in the Free Stae of Saxony, and the investigation procedure chosen by the projact team. The prognostic calculations allow to conlude that the introduction of an IT-based RRPT network in the Free State of Saxony will lead to considerable gains potential for RRPT. The investigations carried out are to be seen as an intermediate step towards a long-term planning of RRPT for Free State.

Single-level Urban Junctions
The directives for the road planning contain draft elements for single-level urban junctions which start from a consequent application of the principle of separation and which attribute to each means of transport its own space. This demands a sufficient space. In many towns and communities, the necessary space is not available. By means of "intelligent" traffic signals, the separation of space of the means of transport can be replaced by a separation in time which permits to economize space. The study made on the combination of different measures relative to the draft and operation reveal that the measures in question are meanwhile applicable to the practice, that they are positively evaluated by the respective administrations and that they are largely put into practice.

Simulation of Operation and Planning of City Railways
The program Simu++ elaborated at the institute for transport, railway construction and operation (IVE) of the university of Hanover allows to model and to evaluate the effects of measures of construction and operation in the fields of underground and city railway systems before their execution. Simu++ has been used during the past two years in order to examine different problems by order of national and international local transport enterprises (e.g. Hanover, Saarbrücken, The Hague). The easy handling of the program and its considerably enlarged functionality in comparison with the former versions permit to deal multiple tasks of planning very efficiently.

The municipal service enterprises of Remscheid have installed a program for the calculation of performances and results per line. The program is compatible with the current versions of windows. The program is able to list lines, transport regions and hours as cost und financial units. The necessary input data (cost and financial units, results of the enterprise, data to be called for) are automatically entered. A special importance is attached to a most realistic possible representation of the proceeds. The development of the procedure has allowed to make important conclusions.

Fit for Competition?
The Society for Inter-company Comparisons in Public Transportation, called ZBV, was founded in 1950 in Hamburg in order to help its members improve their efficiency by comparing them to each other using more than 900 relevant performance measures. Starting in 2000, the content and process of this yearly comparison will change. This change will include new performance measures, a new process-based structure, different (new/improved) ways of accessing the data pool and a new IT system. The IT system is based on TM1 from Applix, which is an OLAP (0nLine Analytical Processing) Database, insight (Arcplan), and Excel (Microsoft). This standard software package can be used not only for yearly comparisons, but also in support of the Management Accounting function in each member company. In many cases, the comparison based on performance measures may lead to a detailed Benchmarking project with selected partners.

However, one must at first determine which receipts are to be distributed. Totally different codings have been elaborated for this purpose. On the one hand, the author comprehensively explains the different methods, on the other hand, he subjects the systems of the distribution of receipts applied up to now to a critical examination.
