Short Prolongation of a Line with Great Effect
On 28th May, 2000, the BVG has put into service a new prolongation. It concerns the prolongation of about 600 m from the previous terminal Revaler Straße to the underground station Warschauer Straße. As it was impossible to install a turning of the rails at the new terminal, bidirectional vehicles are once more after a long period used. These bidirectional vehicles are low-platform vehicles. About one million passengers will profit from the shortened distance between two stations of a transfer.

Summary
Programm for Attractive Stations
Together with its passenger advisory board the Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund (RMV) has developed a program to enhance the attractiveness of its stations. Besides smaller alterations and the renewal of the guiding system, the main emphasis involves the installation of information and waiting islands. To prove its acceptance RMV conducted a market research study in 1999. In result the stations with information and waiting islands got a grade of 2.9 out of a scale ranging from 1 (total satisfaction) to 5 (disatisfaction). Stations without islands got a overall result of 3.4. This proves that already small measures have helped to improve the customerís satisfaction with public transportation facilities.

Learning with the Computer
The education and continued education of the driving and technical service in the public transit have to be organized more economically and the quality has to be improved. To this end, teaching sofware can for example be used. These CBT-programs (Computer-Based-Training) permit to the learner to acquire his knowledge himself (learning by doing), it remains engraved upon his mind. The interaction of the programs motivates the learner so much that he works with them also in his leasure time. The article describes the development and the production of the CBTs used by the Stuttgarter Straßenbahnen AG (enterprise of tramways in Stuttgart).

New Classification of Goods Railways
On the background of the European liberalization in the field of railways, the classification used up to now and making a distinction between federal and non-federal and public and non-public railways is no longer up-to date. On the one hand, the line and the enterprise have to be considered separately, on the other hand, the range of each railway has to be redefined independently of its network. New types of railway enterprises are enterprises for the railway infrastructure, works railways, railways of connection, regional and long-distance railways. These different types of railway enterprises cooperate in most different constellations in interregional networks in order to fulfill in a flexible way the clients´s demands. Moreover, further enterprises of logistics and transport operators complete the cooperation within the network.

Summary
With Internet and Theatre
Young people are an essential target group for public transport companies. The challenge is to keep ridership high beyond the 18th birthday ñ to turn captive riders into fun riders. The youth strategy of Evag in Essen seeks to offer a well-balanced approach including a company tour, a musical, school material and, as a latest element, the youth specific webside FAHR! (RIDE). With the right mix of usefulness, fun and extra-value and a good communication, there is a clear potential for long-term success.

Can the Manual of Time-tables be Replaced by the Internet and CD-ROMs?
The manual of time-tables offers to the clients a complete view on the time-tables within the transport association. It is an important means of information especially in the cities and there above all for the regular users. Individual time-tables written on paper and also offers in the field of "New Media" cannot replace the manual of time-tables within a short or medium time. However, the clients accept these media to complete the traditional means of information.

Video surveillance and passenger information for moving vehicles
The radio supported data transmission system MTSS (moving train surveillance system) allows for the first time real-time transmission of video and audio data trom the interior of moving carriages and also passenger information to be fed to the trains in the reverse direction. Based on the wireless LAN network sorelan it has a transmission rate of 11 Mbit/s. Digitally recorded sequences from the carriages can permanently be called up by the central control room and be followed on monitors in video quality. The emergency case is triggered by the pressing of alarm buttons or by acoustic signals (scratching on windows, screams, etc.) and signalled immediately to the control room.

Wie wichtig sind Bahnen und Busse für die Wirtschaft in den Städten und Gemeinden?
Summary
Public transport as a locational factor
In addition to ecological improvements and advantages for the mobility of citizens, local and regional public transport offers considerable benefits to private enterprises. This has been demonstrated in a recent study of Prognos in a number of German conurbations. In a survey, business executives ranked the service of public transport as one of the most important locational factors related to transport. Whereas most experts in business promotion underestimate the importance of public transport for business, the results of the study lead to the conclusion that a better integration of marketing approaches for business sites and for public transport can be strongly recommended.

Marking of Right-of-Ways on Roads
The study made on the infrastructure of railroads integrated into the road with separation of the means of transport in combination with one-corridor one-way lanes have shown that the traffic can well be organized if the total traffic corresponds to 900 cars per hour and direction. But also other aims important during the planning of the roads can well be realized. This is especially true for the quality of the motor, cycle and foot traffic. The high rate of accidents revealed within the framework of an analysis on accidents could not be led back to the form of the infrastructure of railroads.

Analysis of Preferences Regarding the Public Transit in Dresden
In 1998, the transport network in the southern part of Dresden has been reorganized. This implied a transfer from the tramway to the bus and an extension of the bus links. Following an analysis of the actual state, different hypotheses have been analyzed and evaluated thanks to the transport software ptv vision. Thus, the best scenario concerning the attractiveness and the profitability could have been found. The realization of the conception has been accompanied by vast surveys. Before and afterwards, the passengers and residents have been questioned on their behaviour and how they evaluate the quality of the public transit services.

More Fairness on the Level of Competition thanks to Usage Fees
The Ministry of Transport and Civil Engineering and Building Activities plans to introduce for heavy motor lorries a usage fee according to the degree of utilization. Contrary to the roads traffic, the rail traffic is already subject to such usage fees with the aim to cover the whole costs relative to the infrastructure. The result are important distortions of competition to the disadvantage of the rail goods traffic. The introduction of usage fees for roads is an appropriate and pragmatic measure in order to harmonize finally the financing of the infrastructures of the transport operators. Fair prices for the use of the infrastructure presuppose that the costs relative to the infrastructure are at the complete charge of the users of this infrastructure according to the degree of utilization. Therefore, the aim is to cover the costs relative to the infrastructure by the usage fees.
