Summary
Strategy for the Regional Traffic
Since 1902, the SBB are the leader of the regional traffic in Switzerland. Following a phase of recession in the beginning of the nineties, the Railway Law of 1996 has led to a reorientation. This strategy was successful, since the regional traffic SBB has reached in 2001/2002 more than 51 million train-kilometers and thus a record value. The realisation of eight S-Bahn-systems and fare associations for the whole region as well as a radical replacement of the rolling stock indicate further ambitious aims for the current decade.

Soft Characteristics of Services in the Public Transit
The railway reform and the regionalization as well as the modification of the EC legislation have led to a new distribution of the tasks of the responsibles on the local traffic market which has to be put into practice in the field of public transit on the basis of transport contracts. The elaboration of the contract should take the reality on the rail and on the road into account. The contract should also be adapted during the term of the contract to the changing needs of the passengers. The FE-project Role of soft characteristics of services during the elaboration of services as well as their consideration with regard to the distribution of receipts and the allocation of services on the competing market deals with an essential aspect of this task.

Ein Verfahren zur nachfragebezogenen Messung der Dienstleistungsqualität von Verkehrsunternehmen
Summary
Silent Shopping in the Public Transit
The authors present a procedure neglected up to now by the public transit in order to measure the service quality in a demand-orientated way. The Silent Shopping is an objective procedure which measures the service quality from the client´s point of view. The Silent Shoppers (the clients who realize the test) create in an aimed way standardized situations of demand. The codification of the observation is made immediately after the situation by means of standardized forms of observation. Contrary to traditional inquiries made with clients, the Silent Shopping has no abstract evaluations, but concrete code numbers and descriptions of the service quality which can be useful for the realization of training measures. Thus, the Silent Shopping contributes to assure and to improve the service quality.

How to Reduce the Psychical Stress
The work in control stations demands a high psychical stress. This is examined by means of procedures of observation according to the tasks and relative to the industrial psychology in a bus control station in Northern Germany. Measures are proposed also in view of the new DIN 10075, part 2, which contains solutions concerning the psychical stress.

Bonus for the Rail Traffic: Is It only a Myth?
By means of an empirical study, it is shown that in case of a free choice between bus and rail traffic, the rail means of transport is given the priority. Thus, the bonus for the rail traffic is proven. The motives of decision differ according to the different aim-groups. A qualitative analysis of the decisions and its reasons makes conclusions on possible psychological motives possible and permits to determine the respective accepted advantages of bus and rail traffic and to deduce useful indications for the practice.

ET: New access barriers by chipcard-validators?
The article deals with the planned introduction of an automatic fare collection system in the area of the Rhine-Main Transportation authority. It describes a survey proofing the impact of chipcard-validators on movements of passengers on intensely frequented platforms. Several solutions are being verified with the computer simulation programme ASERI on the example of Frankfurt Main central station, which is one of the largest stations in Germany concerning amount of passengers. A basis for this survey were detailed analysis on passengers and their moving-behaviour.

Summary
With Tramway to the Lossetal
The new time-table 2001 plans the reintroduction of the passenger transport on the line of the Lossetalbahn between Kassel and Helsa which means that a further model of a common operation tramways and railways on one track has been realized. A lengthy and risky planning process has thus been successfully completed. Since the first approaches of planning to the takeover of the old infrastructure of the German Railway by the Regionalbahn Kassel via the building permit, the ensuring of the financing of the investments and the operation, ten years have passed. The common operation of tramways and railways on railway lines demands new methods and a broad interpretation of the legal fundamental conditions and it shows that the classical separation between tramways and railways must be abolished in the interest of links without transfer.

Summary
Mobility and Choice of Means of Transport
Thanks to representative surveys carried out annually with the population, the Verkehrsgesellschaft Frankfurt am Main disposes since the beginning of its cooperation (1996) with the statistical office of Frankfort on the Main of vast, regularly investigated and updated data on the mobility and the choice of transport of the adult inhabitants of Frankfort on the Main. The article deals with the aims of the trip, the used means of transport (also differenciated according to sociodemographic characteristics and conditions of mobility) and the used means of transport as well as with the contentment with the Frankfort local traffic services and the general attitude towards the latter. The special importance of communication and information for the decision in favour of the public transit is taken into account for a detailed analysis of the state of knowledge and information concerning places and times of departure as well as the fares. The necessity of further measures of marketing in this sector is deduced from the results.

Summary
Efficient Determination of Transport Demand
With the new traffic forecast model of the 2000 version of the Standardised Evaluation Method (Standardisierte Bewertung), it is possible to calculate all relevant influences on traffic demand caused by investment in the public transport sector. These forecasts are based on the comparison of transport quality between private car and public transport. Besides describing the quality of supply in public transport in the classic terms of travel time and the necessity of interchanges, additional indicators are calculated. These factors are used for evaluating accessibility and the temporal availability of public transport in the planning area, comfort and the reliability of different public transport services or line concepts. Due to the modelís differential calculation algorithm, it is possible to use the model not only in urban centres but also in rural areas.

Summary
Biological Material as Fuel
In view of of a energy supply compatible with the environment and climate, renewable energies are considered as a promising solution. This is especially true for fuels which essentially contribute to the whole final energy consumption in Germany. The authors want to show the possibilities and limits of a supply of the fuel demand in Germany on the basis of biological material. The general introduction of the thematic is followed by a detailed analysis of some chose effects on the environment on the example of the use of some biological and fossil fuels in a modern regular bus. The authors thus anwer to the question if the use of renewable energies from the point of view of the aims regarding the environment constitute an improvement compared to fossil energies.

Measures against Travelling without Paying
During a joint project VRR GmbH and ebc Consult GmbH developed a concept to improve ticket inspection management. Key result: Systematic optimization in this area could generate a substantial increase in sales in most German public transport companies. The Project partners identified usage of specialized controlling instruments, further developments in qualification and more effective deployment of inspection staff as well as the long overdue transfer of responsibility for this task to top sales management as critical success factors for a comprehensive exploitation of the abovementioned return potential.
