Assurance of Intersystem Connections
The investigation of an interface which should integrate computer-based operational control equipment of different transportation companies in order to assure intersystem connections was the topic of a research project assigned by the German Ministry of Transportation, Building and Housing. Operational requirements and data transmission were investigated in detail and were co-ordinated between several transportation companies and manufacturers. An important part of this matter is the dynamic passenger information. The result of the project was published as a report of the (VDV).

Summary
Digital Communication in the Public Transit
At present, the Berlin transport enterprises (BVG) are introducing a modern and digital radio network within a RBL application. Following an invitation of tenders on a European-wide level, the decision has been taken in 1996 in favour of a system according to the Tetrapol standard of AEG Mobile Communication. As for the demands, the BVG have elaborated an ambitious profile as the starting base for which the radio system offers adapted solutions. During the period of introduction, the developers of the system and the users have made extensive experiences which can be useful for other enterprises.

Summary
On-Line Passenger Information
In the frame of a model project, two regional bus companies from the Magdeburg region put a mobile passenger information system into operation, based on WAP mobile phones. The model project has shown that even smaller public transport companies, which serve in the regional countryside, are able to offer passenger information at any time and at any place. The step by step realisation of the project made the introduction to the service easier, whereby the benefit to passengers was already obvious during the first phase. The article introduces the information technological idea and first experiences on the setting up and design of a service made as attractive as possible, taking into consideration the limited control and presentation abilities of WAP mobiles phones by different manufacturers.

Conference on the Future of the Local Public Transit
On the background of the difficult situation regarding the politico-legal fundamental conditions, the interests of the enterprises and the clients´ increasing demands, new instruments of planning and dialogue for the organisation of the public transit seem to be necessary. The Düsseldorf traffic enterprise Rheinbahn has introduced an ambitious process of dialogue and participation with clients and important representatives of decision and interests in Düsseldorf. During six months, different questions and problems concerning the local traffic have commonly been discussed in a citizen forum in order to realize in a conference on the future together with decision-makers common recommendations. Thus, it was possible to give important impulses for an attractive and client-orientated public transit in Düsseldorf.

A Regional Rail System as Trade-marked Article
For all branches it becomes more and more important to form independent trade-marks with a positive image. Moreover, the consumers obviously have a strong demand for individualization. The private transport, that is the automobile industry, has reacted to these two tendencies with continually new strategies of image and product. Even for a small regional rail system, it is possible to create its own trade-mark identity as the authors have described in this article on the example of the Oberpfalzbahn (Upper Palatinate Railway) recently put into service. An important factor is a consequent corporate design system.

Wheelset Treatment with Mobiturn
For the expensive and necessary reprofiling of the wheels of rail vehicles, the first underfloor wheelset lathe was able to reduce the costs of the reprofiling by 60 per cent on an average for the users in 1959. In 2002, the mobile wheelset lathe Mobiturn has offered
the users a potential of economy of 50 per cent of the costs of treatment of an underfloor wheelset lathe. This represents especially for small and medium-sized enterprises a promising alternative for the treatment of wheelsets which permits them to improve in the long run the structure of costs of the maintenance of vehicles.

Summary
Motives of the Choice of the Means of Transport
An anterior/posterior study on the reopening of the railway called Ermstalbahn makes important bases available for the decisions of planning of the operating enterprise Zugbus Regionalverkehr Alb-Bodensee, for the orderer as the land Baden-Württemberg (NVBW) and for scientific questions regarding the transport. The determination of an increase in passengers of 13 per cent and mainly the differenciated data on the behaviour of the choice of the means of transport of different groups of clients confirme the train-bus concept. More than one third of the passengers in the train are new clients. At the same time, the train-bus concept was able to keep its clients despite a reduced total number of trips. Moreover, a financially justifiable concept of operation has been realized. Finally, the study has worked out details on the preferences of the passengers. These have led to results concerning the models for the choice of the means of transport (e.g. a model for the determination of the share of the different means of transport in a standardized evaluation).

Stations for Tramways and Busses
Vehicles and stations must optimally be harmonized in order to permit passengers with a limited mobiliy an easy access to the public transit and to accelerate their boarding and alighting. For the simultaneous boarding and alighting at stations used together by tramways and busses, the patented Combibord de Dresden is well-tried. It can adapt the breadth between the kerb and the height of boarding to the respective components of the vehicle. Moreover, the authors present the standard solution of Dresden for a station with isle platforms as well as cap solutions as alternatives to isles.

Electronic guide to park-and-ride-facilities
Up to now the park-and-ride-system in the region Berlin-Brandenburg is still a little developed one. To the increase of the attraction and the grade of familiarity the VBB (Berlin-Brandenburg Transit Authority) and the BMW Group tied together their Internet-platforms www.vbbonline.de and www.parkinfo.com. For the first time the complete park-and-ride-offer of a region with extensive information to expelled and not expelled park-and-ride-facilities and to the offer of local public traffic is represented on-line. The co-operation between the VBB and the BMW Group will be extended to other Brandenburg-cities.

Summary
Public Transit without barriers
The infrastructure of local public transport in rural areas of Hannover Region falls far short of meeting the needs of passengers of limited mobility. This situation is exacerbated in that many disabled facilities are located in rural areas. In a traffic study prepared in close collaboration with disabled organisations, a concept was drafted to realise the barrier-free upgrading of local public transport in rural areas within a long-term programme. The selection of routes and the development of upgrade phases was based on an analysis of
the important objectives and facilities of persons of limited mobility and a study of the bus network with the goal of establishing continuous barrier-free chains of connecting journeys from rural areas into the city of Hannover. Detailed upgrading measures and costs were determined taking a pilot line as example.

Metrorapid: Object of Prestige or a Reasonable Complement of the Rail Local Traffic
Before the suspension of the transrapid project Berlin-Hamburg, nobody had seriously thought of the use of the transrapid for local traffic lines in agglomerations. Suddenly this situation has become reality: The line DüsseldorfñDortmund and the airport railway in the region of Munich are favoured by the regional policy. If these projects constitute an optimal use of the more and more limited means must be questioned. The author tries to give a survey of the development of the transrapid and he deals with quite a number of questions concerning the Metrorapid. Finally he puts the question if there is really a need of a transrapid line in Germany after the local traffic project under way of the airport in Shanghai.

Positive Perspectives for the Trolley Bus
The trolley bus has been considered for a long time as an antiquated means of transport. An exact operational and economic analysis shows however that the trolley bus is quite well an interesting alternative to the traditional transit ñ especially when prices of fuel are increasing. From the operational point of view, calculations have revealed that it is necessary to use the existing infrastructure of the trolley bus. On the level of the whole national economy, the trolley bus is largely superior to the Diesel bus, despite high costs of investment, which justifies above all the extension of existing systems.
