Public Transport Electronic Ticketing system
The SüdbadenBus GmbH in Freiburg. Germany recieved the German publik transport innovations prize for itís electronic ticketing system. The three essential elements of this system being coinless payment, contactless payment and transfer of the sales made per radio. Coinless payments reduce the overheads involved in handling haed money for the passenger and the transport company. The contactless electronic ticket incrases passenger comfort. Both increase the speed with which the bus driver can process the passengers thereby shortening the overall journey time. The data transfer of the sales made per radio means the passengerís fare reaches the transport companyís bank account faster with the obivous interest advantages.

Night time transport and high-speed traffic with busses: economically acceptable?
The Department of Traffic and Transport Planning of the University of Kassel questionned transport companies regarding the demands for night and high speed busses. This study should inform about the effects these types of transport have on passenger demand and also about the efficiency of such traffic demands. The valuations of transport companies concerning the prospects of individual traffic services are as follows: The evaluation for regular night time busses as well as for high speed busses is predominantly positive. Whereas the prospects for the disco bus transport are rather negative.

Enhancing the use of local public transportation means by Soft Policy Measures
Empirical studies demonstrate that very often car use instead of public transportation means cannot be justifed by objective functional requirements such as transportation of goods or deficiency of public transport supply. In these cases only subjective reasons are decisive for using a car, namely less infomations about alternatives existing, negative attitudes or emotional reservations against public transportation means in general, or negative assumptions on specific attributes of the alternatives , a kind of habitual acting which means the selecting of car without a rational consideration of alternatives available. In those cases Soft Policy Measures, namely information campaigns and special incentives are the right way in order to significantly enhance the use of public transportation means.

Connect - Timetable Information for the state of Lower Saxony
Electronic timetable information systems are an important element of the information policy for local public transport. They improve people's awareness of the services on offer, thus contributing towards increasing demand and improving the image of local public transport. In order to facilitate the continuous usage of local public transport over all the regions and service zones, regional and national electronic timetable information systems are being developed throughout Germany. Lower Saxony and Bremen are pursuing a plural system approach which ensures the independence of the regional operators of timetable information systems while simultaneously guaranteeing that it can be integrated in a future timetable information system which will cover the whole of Germany and Europe.

Summary
The Manager According to BOStrab
BOStrab (German federal regulation governing the construction and operation of light rail transport systems) does not say much about the function of the manager. Considering the importance of the manager for an enterprise, the enterprises have a large organisational scope. The total of the BOStrab regulations leads to a multitude of fixed points which constitute the unwritten required profile of a manager which completes the rare formal definitions. This is important especially for the integration of the manager into the organisation of the enterprise and for the relation between the manager and the employees and the administration as well as for the risks linked to the liability.

Diminution of stray currents of Light Rail Rapid Transits and Tramways
In December 1998, the European norm EN 50122-2 Measures against the effects of stray currents caused by direct-current railways has been made public. It has been published in May 1999 under the title DIN VDE 0115-4. According to it, the negative effects of stray currents have to be evaluated already during the planning and the rails have to be undergrounded. In case of constructions made of reinforced concrete such as tunnels, bridges and tracks, the armouring has to be of conductive metal and connected with sheats across the joints.

Wear of Wheels and Polygonal Tear of Wheels of Tramways
The complex correlations of the formation of polygons in case of the Berlin tramway demand a global and pragmatical view. The study has shown that the low position of the underfloor lathe does not suppress polygons, but that it copies them. From now on, the optimization of the lathe makes a broadband reduction of the existing polygons possible and it largely avoids its formation. It is expected that the formation of polygons as a phenomenon of wear will no longer cause great problems.

The tendering process for short distance passenger rail traffic
The federal of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is the responsible authority for affairs of short distance passenger rail traffic within the region. For matters of planning, organization and financing of these services, the Verkehrsgesellschaft Mecklenburg-Vorpommern mbH (VMV) was founded. After categorizing the rail network of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern into twelve subnetworks, the VMV decided to open the market for more competition and posted invitations to tender for three subnetworks, corresponding to 20 % of the total of short distance transportation services in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. After having described the goals and the different sections of the procedure the authors portray the experiences and results of these efforts to establish more competition in the short distance rail traffic market of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, e.g. a decrease of compensation payments of 10 to 15 % with simultaneous improvents in service quality.

Does Salzburg get a new LRT service?
The surroundings of Salzburg are charakterised by a continous sprawl and a steady increase in popilation and Traffic. The rail infrastructure which is available in most parts offers the possibility of public transport services at reasonable costs. Also a new route is designed to become part of the whole transport system linking the City of Hallein with Salzburg via Anif. To find out the practicality of the new railroad-system, of the new stops at existing lincs and of the new LRT-service it was necessary to take the whole railroad-system of the central area of Salzburg consideration. The passenger denmad-analysis was based on the data from the public transport passenger survey of 1996.

Summary
Optimization of Public Transport
An optimization of public transport has been initiated in the district of Uecker-Randow, the planning office of which gets only a payment in case of a successful realization and in accordance with its economic success. The planning was thus orientated towards its realization from the beginning. The time of commencement at 27 schools has succussfully been changed, so that a more economic use of the vehicles and the personnel is possible. The otpimization together with a better offer have led to an annual reduction of costs of about eight per cent. The harmonization between the district, the transport enterprise, the planning office, the schools and the parents´ representations have been decisive for the success.

Organisation modes, financing and licensing of small town bus systems
There are three ways of implementing a particular small town bus system: The town founds a passenger transport entity of its own, or the town contracts an existing pas-senger transport company, or the town and an existing passenger transport company form a joint venture. The various sources of financing both investment and continu-ous operating costs are discussed. Even in the modified legal frame licensing the small town bus is necessary. The conditions of licensing are explained.
